Unlimited livesGo outside the castle, near the waterfall. Climb the third tree from the waterfall. Do a handstand on top of the tree to get a one-up. Then, enter the castle's first floor. Now return outside and climb the same tree. Do another handstand for another one-up. Repeat this trick to collect an unlimited amount of lives.
Infinite lives (Japanese version)
During the first fight with Bowser, continuously avoid him and collect all the coins that appear. Continue to do this until 1000 coins have been collected. Then, a green "M" will appear next to the number of lives remaining. From this point on, when a life is lost, the number of lives increases. While gaining lives will actually lower the number of lives remaining. The cheat will end if the number of lives reaches zero, such as when Yoshi gives Mario 100 lives after obtaining 120 stars. This trick cannot be done on the North American version as it only allows 999 coins to be collected. Note: Once the game is ended you will no longer have infinite lives.
One-up butterflies
Butterflies may appear on courses 2, 12, and 13. Punch the butterflies to turn them into round black bombs that will chase Mario. Then, the bombs will explode or turn into one-up mushrooms.
One-ups in third Bowser battle
Walk behind the top left pillar to collect a 1-Up if you lose a life during the battle.
Yoshi
Obtain all 120 stars and go outside the castle. Climb inside the cannon opening that is now located where the grating was near the Fish Pond. Aim to land Mario onto the roof, where he will meet Yoshi. Then, he will speak to Mario, award a 100 life bonus and a triple-jump move, and quickly leave.
Alternate Bowser message
Obtain all 120 stars and return to the final fight with Bowser to see a different message.
Very big penguin
Obtain all 120 stars and return to Course 4 (Cool, Cool Mountain). Before entering, select the Big Penguin Race. Then begin the game and jump into the chimney of the house at the beginning of the level. Now the penguin will be even larger than before.
Control ending sequence camera
After beating the game, use the Analog-stick on controller two to control the camera in the scene featuring Mario and the Princess. The camera is also controllable on the Credits screen.

when you walk in the castle go up the stairs and there is a door that you need 1 star to open it.
once you get 1 star go to the door and open it. there are 3 pictures of peach jump in the picture on the right. then you can go down a slide and get a star.

Ok Josh Ogren yes it is true that a cannon will open at the front of the castle. You can use the cannon to launch yourself to the top of the castle where you meet yoshi and he will give you 100 lives.
NOTE:You can only do this after you have collected 120 stars which is the total amount of stars you can get in the whole game.
try getting all 8 red coins in all the bowser levels
There is a way to get on top of the castle without getting 120 stars infact you get get up there in the beginning of a new game. All you have to do is go all the way to the right side of the catsle and use the wall kick move against the hill and grab onto the side off the castle wall. Ive done it and yoshie isnt there but after a couple of times he appeared. P.S..... This takes skill

you know the sun on the floor in the middle of the main room get on it and press top c and look up and you will be in the air you will see a red switch in the very middle tower. and press the switch. ump off the tower and you will be back in the castle. save and there will be red boxes with flying caps in them.

hey rebbeca to get in the secret room on that go to the blue cap on that porch and then go back into the room you came in and go do a wall kick up on the porch quickly before your blue cap runs out and the you know that picture of the gost in the room go in it while wearing the cap and you go through it and then run around the eye ball and then get the star.

you can get in the eye to eye room you need to have the invisible cap and so use the hat and go to the boos balcony but dont go out, go round the coner and theres a picture of boo go in there using the invisible cap and defat the massive eye

There is actualy 121 stars, go into the clock and climb all the way up inside the clock.Look down and you will see the hand of the clock turning.in the center is what looks like a target from above.do a slam jump in the center of the target and smash it you will exit the clock and where the pendulem was swinging will be a star.

also after you get more than 50 stars go down to the basement and catch the rabbit again and he will give u another secret star!
